Looking back, Eskifjörður has the second oldest tradition as a trading post in East Iceland (after Djúpivogur, Sudur-Mulasysla, Iceland), having received its certification at the same time as Reykjavík, Iceland, when the Danish monopoly in Iceland was relaxed in 1786. In the background, across the fjord, stands mt. Hólmatindur , at 985 meters high, overlooking the fjord. One of the most well known spar mining quarry’s in the world is in “Helgustaðir”, but there the spar was mined from the 17th century up until the 20th century.
