Skálafell is a volcanic mountain which serves as a ski resort during winter and a mountain bike park during summer. The mountain is an appr. thirty minutes drive from the capital, Reykjavík, Iceland, a short distance from road nr.36 that leads to the national park of Þingvellir, Arnessysla, Iceland Skálafell is thought to be approximately 1.8 million years old, a remnant of the now dormant Stardalur volcano. The mountain joins to the eastern side of Móskarðshnúkar and mt.Esjan, the tabletop mountain that overlooks Reykjavik.
