Mývatn is a volcanic lake located in the heart of north-east Iceland about 105 kilometres (65 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. Lake Mývatn along with neighboring unique natural phenomena such as Skútustaðagígar, Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall and rich birdlife is truly one of Europe´s greatest natural treasures.
On the northeastern shore, Reykjahlíð village has an information center and is a base for exploring the area. East of here, Myvatn Nature Baths / Jarðböðin við Mývatn have a naturally heated man-made lagoon, with mineral-rich waters known for their health-giving properties. A short distance away, near Námafjall Mountain, is Hverir Geothermal Area, with boiling mud pots and fumaroles.
