The eruption surprised everyone when it started in the valley of Geldingadalur on the Reykjanes peninsula at 20:45 (8:45 PM) last night, but the good news is that the eruption is a relatively small one so far and is located in a completely closed valley, and shouldn’t cause any damage to nearby settlements.

You can see live feed from a webcam located by the eruption site here

You can also see another one of our degree photos from the area (Fagradalsfjall) here, where we marked in the location and magnitude of the biggest earthquakes that were measured in the weeks prior to the eruption

The Geldingadalur volcanic eruption fissure is about 500-700 meters long (1,640-2,300ft), and the eruption started where the seismic activity has been at its highest in recent days.

The last eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsular was some 800 years ago. Here is an article about the top 10 largest volcanic eruptions in Iceland since settlement.

If you plan to go near the eruption site please do so with extreme caution because of deadly gas emissions.  The hike to reach the volcano takes about 3 hours each way (approximately 15 km in total).
