Geysir í Haukadal

Location

Geysir geothermal area is one of the destinations along the famous Golden Circle route in southwestern Iceland. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans. The English word geyser derives from Geysir. The name Geysir itself is derived from the Icelandic verb “geysa”, “to gush”, the verb from Old Norse. Geysir lies in the valley of Haukadalur, Arnessysla, Iceland stopped erupting years ago, but the geyser Strokkur which can be seen erupting on this image goes off appr. every 10-15 minutes.

Nota bene: Drones are not allowed over the geothermal area itself. I managed to capture this 360° panorama image with kind permission from the owners of Hótel Geysir, who allowed me to send my drone up straight above the hotel.
