Stakkholtsgjá

Location

Stakkholtsgja canyon is one of the lesser known jewels of icelandic nature, and can be found near Thórsmörk and the Volcano Huts Þórsmörk. The canyon is surrounded by 100 meter high palagonite cliffs on both sides and inside there is a 2 km long hiking trail that leads to a beautiful waterfall at the bottom of the canyon.

Nearby places: Þórsmörk-Húsadalur, Þórsmörk-Langidalur, Seljalandsfoss

Access to Stakholtsgjá requires a 4X4 vehicle and an experienced driver to get across several unbridged rivers that need to be crossed along the way. From the Ring Road Nr. 1 in the south you turn north on Road Nr. 249, by Seljalandsfoss and continue towards mountain road F249 which eventually leads to Þórsmörk. There are several campsites nearby at Básar, Þórsmörk-Langidalur Ferðafélag Íslands and Slyppugil-Þórsmörk
