The large canyon Almannagjá is a result of tectonic plates getting pulled and by that creating new land. The waterfall is named Öxarárfoss and is actually man made (basically Icelands first large scale landscape architecture), since a river was diverted into that canyon to supply drinking water for those attending \"Alþingi\", one of the oldest parliaments in the world.
