Öxnadalur

Location

Öxnadalur (Meaning: “Ox-Valley”) is without a doubt one of the most scenic valleys in North Iceland and is situated right by ICELAND’S RING ROAD … the most awesome 830 mile road trip. The valley is crowned with the famous mountain peak Hraundrangi that can be seen behind the old farm and the 19th century poet Jónas Hallgrímsson home at Hraun í Öxnadal – Jónasarsetur.

The farm and the valley have also inspired many artists, poets and musicians in Iceland, such as the band Sigur-Rós, featured in the documentary Sigur Ros – Heima. Öxnadalur is a deep valley, next to Hörgárdalur on the western side of Eyjafjörður, on the way to Akureyri. The valley is appr.25 km. long and is mostly occupied by farmlands and the powerful river Öxnadalsá flows down the steep valley from the mountains of Tröllaskagi (Troll´s Peninsula). We highly recommend anyone travelling around Iceland to Visit North Iceland where you can find stunning nature and wildlife wherever you look and an admirably well documented and rich history and culture from viking and medieval times. Examples of such places can for example be found at the old turf farm at Glaumbær, Skagafjardarsysla, Iceland, and the old trading post and market at Gásir.
